#MeToo and #AmINext are just some of the hashtags that took the internet by storm after a young woman was not only brutally raped, but murdered, all while running an everyday errand of going to the Post Office.
Statistically, one in three South African women or girls will face physical or sexual violence in their lifetime. Two in five women will physically be assaulted by their partner. One in 15 will be murdered by their partner. Violence is a prevalent cause of death and incapacity among women of reproductive age. In fact, it is a greater cause of ill-health than traffic accidents and malaria combined. 200 million women and girls will undergo female genital mutilation. Our women are endangered.
Why do we need this day?
Violence against women and girls is a widespread, prevalent and horrifying human rights violation that remains largely unreported due to stigma, shame, silence and the lack of support structures available to women who find themselves in these situations. The Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women was issued by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 and defines violence against women as 'any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or private.'
The 2019 theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is ‘Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape’. This year's International Day will mark the launch of 16 days of activism, which will conclude on 10 December 2019 – International Human Rights Day.

We have all heard that children are the future, but it seems that children are increasingly taking this to heart. They understand that they can no longer remain silent on issues that affect them and their future. They are making impactful statements and changes not only to their local environment and communities, but the world at large.
Nedbank distinguished itself as the only banking CA Training Programme (CATP) to feature on the honours roll with not one, but two trainees!
