'When you educate a man, you educate an individual. When you educate a woman, you educate a nation' – African proverb.
On 11 February we celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, a day implemented by UNESCO and UN-Women to promote women and girls in science. This year’s theme is 'Investment in women and girls in science for inclusive green growth.'
What is it about?
Gender equality is a global priority and the support of young girls and their education is a catalyst for development and peace. Only 30% of all female students select science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in higher education. Even today, traditional biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science-related fields.
How does Nedbank contribute?
The Nedbank Coding and Robotics Project, in collaboration with ORT SA's Coding Programme ('the programme'), aims to empower young children to advance in science. The programme aims to change mindsets and improve academic performance in STEM subjects for both teachers and learners.
Learners who completed the programme, showed an understanding of the topics and their ability to write functional code that deliver the desired result. They were guided to come up with creative solutions to real problems that exist in their communities. In addition to solving these problems, they also used their design skills to build solid models while gaining insight into microelectronics.
A further benefit for learners participating in this programme is the interschool competition that allows them to showcase their knowledge and skills. This competition empowers them to continue learning and gives them the confidence to pursue careers in science. We are passionate about education and technology and to empower girls in taking up careers in coding, science and robotics. Through our various corporate social investment programmes we aim to create a culture of gender equality in all industries and will continue to empower girls and women in science.

#MeToo and #AmINext are just some of the hashtags that took the internet by storm after a young woman was not only brutally raped, but murdered, all while running an everyday errand of going to the Post Office.
When it’s your first time buying property and applying for a home loan, you are bound to be anxious and worried about the process.
